SWEDEREDWING--

Thank you for the information and the vocabulary lesson. What is the Swedish word that means "we have enough; let's share"? I know that it starts with an L.

Sundin asleep at the winged wheel ...

Sundin has fanned on the 2008-2009 season, as far as being on a contender anyway. The DRWs wanted him but he was too coy for his own good there. He could have made a cup run with his countrymen and been able to do it just down the road from 'home'. But he's asleep at the wheel, or maybe his agent is. How much more money does he need? From here it appears that the perfect place for him to be was Detroit, with its Swedish connection, SC pedigree, and close proximity to family and friends in Toronto. So I don't get him at all. Hope he enjoys his extra million or three, the guy's a bit of a boob in my book.

According to the swedish newspaper Aftonbladet Mats Sundin have decided for Vancouver. I know it's not about the red wings but found the article when i was reading about E.

E was called obscure defensman in a translation here. The swedish word is "doldis" which means "low profile" or "lesser known".

kahn is just citing the same article we have all been reading our of sweden. Youd think some of these guys (kahn, st james, kulfan, mcleoud) would be able to get holland on the horn and get some actual confirmation on this. Pretty sad day when our own deep diggers need to get their information from swedish media about our players.

exactly my point originally. The only thing a 1 year deal changes is his salary when hes in GR. HE can still be sent down without clearing waivers. His salary wont count against the cap. And i agree with you, hes probably in GR and first called up. (maybe even before meech(#7) in the event of a longterm injury). Again, i woudlnt rule out him beating lilja or lebda for a spot. But if not, back to GR he goes.

Mlive reports that Ericsson deal is almost done

HERE'S THE LINK
And here's the text of the article: The Detroit Red Wings are close to signing defenseman Jonathan Ericsson to a three-year contract, according to Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet. The deal reportedly will average $900,000 a season ($550,000 next season, $900,000 in 2009-10 and $1.25 million in 2010-11). It will be a two-way contract, meaning Ericsson will receive a lower salary and won't count against the salary cap if he's assigned to Grand Rapids (AHL). With his combination of size (6-5, 225) and skills, Ericsson, 24, is widely regarded as the top prospect in the Red Wings' system. After two seasons with the Griffins, he appears ready to make the jump to the NHL. But because Ericsson is the only player among their 10 defensemen who can be sent to the minors without going through waivers, he is likely to begin the season in Grand Rapids, barring a rash of injuries. Ericsson, the last player selected in the 2002 NHL entry draft (291st overall), had one goal in eight games with the Red Wings last season. He had 10 goals and 24 assists in 69 games with the Griffins. In addition to Ericsson, the Red Wings are expected to sign four other players shortly -- forward Valtteri Filppula, defensemen Chris Chelios and Kyle Quincey, and goaltender Jimmy Howard.

As I understand it, a two way contract only gives the terms for a player when he is playing in the NHL and when he is playing in the minors, but it does not govern the movement between the NHL and the minors. That movement is governed by the CBA, pertaining to waivers, and whether a player can be sent down or not. A two-way contract simply means that a player will earn different amounts of money depending on whether he is currently playing for the NHL team, or one of their minor league teams. While playing in the minor leagues, the player's salary, though still paid by the NHL team, will be a lower amount than his NHL salary. A one way contract guarantees the negotiated NHL rate of pay regardless of whether the player is sent down.

It is a common misconception that a two-way contract allows a club to send the player to the farm team without putting him on waivers. In fact, the waiver rules depend on a number of factors, including the player's age when he signed his first NHL contract and the number of games he has played in the NHL. Whether a player has a 1-way or 2-way contract has absolutely no effect on his waiver status - it has to do with the number of years since the player signed his first NHL contract and the number of NHL games he's played since signing.

There is no way that an individual player contract could override the provisions of the CBA that allow a club to send a player down without clearing waivers during the period that they are eligible to do so. The CBA (collective bargaining agreement) is a set of rules that govern all contracts. It is the master contract between the players' union and the NHL, and it provides a framework for all contracts.

The league has what they call the SPC- Standard Player contract, and there are terms and clauses that clubs and players can agree to beyond that, but they can't override the provisions of the CBA, or change terms in the SPC. The vast majority of these clauses are basically cut and paste jobs that have been used often in other contracts, and legal counsel for other players and clubs have looked them over to fit a given situation. So they take the SPC and then add the clauses that the two sides agree upon, and you have your individual player's contract. Occasionally, there may be need to draft brand new language to fit a unique situation, but mainly they are just tweaking what has already been drafted in similar situations. The key figures that change, of course, are the dollar amounts and the duration of the contracts.

I also have no doubt at all that the CBA governs the cap completely, and the salary of any player in GR does not count against the cap. A club has 20 to 23 players on it's roster at a given time, and those are the salaries that count towards the cap. Salaries of players in the minors or on the injured list for the minimum amount of time don't count against the cap.

As this pertains to big E, I think that the club will be able to send him down for one more year without clearing waivers, and there is nothing that either he or the team can do about that provision. If it's a three year deal, the second and third years are what matters in terms of doing a one way or two way deal. However, the terms still can not change the fact that he WOULD have to clear waivers to be sent down in the second and third years of his contract.

In some circumstances, players even have to clear waivers to be called back up after being sent down, and a team could lose them trying to call them back up. This provision was included in the CBA to prevent deeper teams from stashing veterans in the minor leagues, where they are not subject to cap limitations. Re-entry waivers are another issue entirely, and they're not working like they were intended, but this has no real impact on Ericsson, except that he's not likely to be sent down in his second or third year of his new deal if he gets a one way contract, because the Wings could lose him upon recall, and get stuck for half of his salary AND the cap hit, without having him on the team. Same is true for every player on a one way contract. The way that recall waivers are avoided is to have the player on a two way contract with a salary in the AHL below the $ 95 K limit so that recall waivers don't apply.

I think that E signing a three year deal with the Wings means that they have every intention of keeping him in future years. My sense of the situation hasn't changed. I think that E will have every opportunity to make the team in camp and during the exhibition season, and I think that Lilja is the most likely one to go in order to make room for him, barring any injuries. It may not happen before the puck drops in game one, but I think that's what will happen. Of course, an injury to one of the D men changes things. With 8 being carried, and the top four set with Chelios being another, that leaves the 5, 6, and 7 slots, and you have Lebda, Lilja, E, Q, and Meech up for those three. If the rumors are true, putting E on the roster causes a cap hit of plus or minus $ 400 K or so, depending upon which player's place he is taking on the roster, and that's not enough to cause any concern.

Hey has anyone heard anything about bring Mac back this season? I have been traveling for he past month and have not heard anything.

Tiger-Dog

Take a look at my post of 8:44. Maybe you can interpret the CBA rule that I copy/pasted in that post. Even if the Wings sign "E" to a one-way, it seems that the Wings might just be able to send "E" down without putting him through waivers, or at least that is the opinion of the person that posted on another site. Whats your thoughts on that paragraph?

Ericsson

According to www.nhlnumbers.com Ericsson's salary is already listed there but i have yet to see an official announcement anywhere.

Thanks, I thought that was the case, at least I was hoping so. I, like you, will be thrilled when he is signed.

I read on the M-Live blog that even if E signs a one-way in his first year that the team can still send him down to GR. A poster on that blog stated the following:

copy/pasted:

"The CBA wouldn't allow anything in the contract preventing him from being assigned to Grand Rapids anyhow since he's in his final waiver-exempt season in 2008-09. Even a one-way contract can't prevent the Wings from assigning him the Grand Rapids, and his cap hit wouldn't count against us if he was down there."

So, if that's true (and maybe one of the contractual experts here on the forum can verify it), he can go down without having to clear waivers, and his salary won't count against our cap when he's in GR.

I'll just be glad to know they signed him for 3 years, and that in 2009-10 he'll be on he big team for certain. Either way I expect him to be the first guy up from GR if he doesn't make the big team and get into some NHL games. Perfect! I'd be satisfied with that outcome.

Question

In baseball you have a certain amount of "options" to be sent to the minors without having to clear waivers. What about hockey? Can you only be sent to the minors without clearing on a two way contract?

This multi tasking thing is tougher than it looks. When they child proof the system on me, I have no chance, dammit.

Scout- we'll have good news very soon. I've thought about E being able to be a swing man too, but with all the time that they've invested in getting him prepared to be a defenseman in the NHL, I think that's enough to put on his plate when he gets his ticket to the big show. I also think that we sometimes put too much stock in the numbers. 5, 6, and 7 could all see just about the same amount of ice time. Ideally, we see big E paired up with some of the top four guys as well on occasion. I don't think there is any chance that the Wings try to put E through waivers. Quincey, maybe, but not big E. I think his deal will be a two way deal for the first year at least, but he'll see plenty of time on the roster any way you cut it.

Your said:

"He (Ericsson) can still clear waivers"

I say: Not an icebergs chance in hell he clears waivers.

If E gets a first year one-way, he's on the big team as #7.

And remember, E was a forward until 2 years ago, so he could do what Meech did, and that is fill in on forward if he had to. His size and speed make lots of things possible.

But the reason I haven't been commenting on this thing is that it is just speculation and it was interpeted from Swedish, and anything is possible, even that someone in Sweden dreamed the whole thing up!
