Surely, BG understands that email drives the internet not Google...come on ... I should be working in Marketing at MS-we would be slamming Google and Apple and when our stock price increased ... I would be pushing the envelop for MS to show its pervasive leadership in the tech sector!
I would have purchased Yahoo at a premium: together Yahoo and Hotmail would have been the number on Messenger Serive and email service ...where new streaming technology could have been carried from the digital laptop to the digital t.v. (mandated next year) in every home!
MS should get going on its endeavor to be seen as a leader..instead of a lap dog of Google's.

like to know who the $27,000 cruise for four with a $15,000 T-shirt encrusted in diamonds with the cruise line's name was for and where the contest details? Might have been the wrong target audience for the prize?

Excellent article on a great effort going on. The only thing that was not mentioned is that ReCellular is a FOR PROFIT Company and while they do help charities they are not giving nearly as much back to the community and helping the environment.
There are other alternatives such as http://www.recyclingforcharities.com that are 501(c)(3) charities that do wireless recycling and give back directly to charities.
Consumers need to know that they can still give online and take a tax deduction when donating to Recycling for Charities, not ReCellular.

Given that 80+% of the US popuslation is white and 11% is black what did you expect? All this demotrates is that Google is doing its job properly.
If your solution is to create a racist search engine have at it. That's the beauty of the Internet.

This is the title to an article in InformationWeek published July 8, 2008.
The demand for and shortage of US IT professionals is real. As is the demand for and shortage of Michigan IT professionals.
I am the President of Latitude Consulting Group. We are a consultancy that develops critical software systems for Fortune 100 companies. We've delivered solutions where others (Accenture, PWC, IBM and EDS) have failed.
We are not a staffing agency. We hire consultants and rarely hire for specific job roles (which is what staffing agencies do in their ads). We are looking for extraordinarily talented consultants with a wide variety of IT and related skills and would welcome correspondence from anyone that meets this broad definition. We then hire based on the talent and skills we observe during the recruiting process. So this is why you will rarely see more than ONE job posting on our website!
What we do is difficult and requires IT professionals that are at the top of their game. We are currently looking to add several consultants to our team. The Careers area of our website, http://www.latitudecg.com , describes the responsibilities of a Latitude Consultant and the qualifications of a good candidate.
If you are an IT professional at the top of your game and want to join a fast growing, Michigan-based company, go to our website, www.latitudecg.com, and apply today.

Has anyone bothered to tell Michigan's high school students about the good-paying I T jobs that are waiting for them?
Has anyone told registering college freshman? Is this also a promotional problem?

Don't believe this propaganda. There's only a shortage of LOW WAGE tech workers. Notice these articles always interview IT "Consulting" firms not regular HR recruiters (probably because the "consulting firms" send out Press Releases as a carefully thought out plan to lie to people). These "consulting firms" are contract companies that take a cut of the hourly rate. Therefore if they can bring in people from overseas they can take a bigger cut. Had they interviewed real HR recruiters they would tell you the number of resumes per position is ever-increasing due to job losses at the big 3. So these consulting firms are using this lie as a way to lobby the government to let in more overseas workers - propaganda. And they send to the foreigner to the interview instead of the resident - why? - because they can take a bigger cut of the contract then.

I've lived in Michigan my whole life. I started it the IT field in 1982. I have worked nine years for my alma mater, the University of Michigan and ten years at Ford motor Company. I have to agree with most of the people writing in that the companies have you fooled. I never experenced a tighter job market. Most of the companies that want more H-1B visas are contracting firms that bully foreign workers into lower pay bad jobs so they can have larger profit margins. I have learned the new technologies only to be told I have no experence with them so those on H-1B visas get hired into them. I with over 25 years experence don't get a chance to use my new skills. I would never recomend anybody get an IT degree as long as business management looks at IT professionals as an expence where they can lower cost going with the lowest bid, not as someone they need to compete in there business.

Having just witnessed & participated in recent layoffs (yep, me too) I can only add my frustrated comments to those of the thread so far.
Ok, One thing additional I can comment on: 8-)
Note the age of the "workers" in this article. Did they ever once refer to anyone over the age of 25? And as for lack of workers...hmmm...every try locating your business in say...Oakland County or Macomb County where there are a few experienced & available tech workers? Saline is...ok, but given todays gas prices...not reachable from these counties.
You see, some of us have been around for 25, 30 years or more. We've raised families and are somewhat hesitant to move to a place like this, for a company who shows little interest in actually seeking out qualified persons. But then, why should they, when it's just too easy to get more H1B's on their payroll for just a bit less than most of the fresh out of school kids are getting.
Let's face it. We older IT workers must be Stupid. We should have taken up Journalism, where you can write about anything with little or nothing to back it up. And get paid for it!
Or then, maybe we're just being taking in by the propaganda wing of one of these H1B enthusiast groups. If they continue to put this stuff in the media, the "public" will begin to accept it as truth after a bit.
The other thing we neglect to mention is the rampant age discrimination practiced by employers in this area. OK, maybe it's going on elsewhere, but I've only experienced it here. I actually had a person working for the State telling me, "Oh, they can't do that. That's against the law. They'll pay serious fines for that." What? The only people that believe that pap work for government, and probably still believe ethanol will save America.

Ok. Christina. I can't believe your article managed to be displayed on the main page. So there is a shortage in IT? Did you ask yourself one sensible question? In this case, the IT wages should have been going high up and laid-off workers from other areas would have been rushing in through retraining to get these jobs to feed their families. Did you observe that before you penned this article? Did you even take some time to ponder why a state whose economy relies heavily on the big 3, and the big 3 who have laid off (and are still continuing to lay off) tens of thousands of workers, including PhDs, Masters in Engineering in the last couple of years has a shortage in IT (which is a subset in Engineering) that we need to import foreign workers? You did a good job by interviewing a CEO. Did you interview the IT people on the ground before you concluded that there was a shortage? Just this year, thousands of IT workers were booted from Chrysler and TCS folks were flown in from India by the plane loads. Did you take stock how many of these fled the state or are underemployed or are unemployed? The official unemployment here is 8.5%. The unofficial could be from 15-20%. Look at the horrible foreclosures. Do you think these people would not be willing to take these jobs and stay back instead of declaring bankruptcy or running from the state to reduce losses? Did you observe the visas and how they are being flouted by the foreigners? Each time I respond to an ad, the recruiter is a foreigner. I understand that they are foreigners on visas. Are there are shortages for recruiters too? Instead of penning superficial articles, I wish you would do some critical analysis and connect the dots. That is the least we can expect from a reporter who has access to powerful media.

What a crock!!!! The MI computer industry is being outsourced to India and the current population is being laid off. Maybe the reality of this article is closer to this is the line of babble being used as an excuse to outsource.

It's just another example of the corporate IT "shortage" lie......more propaganda to encourage more H1B visa's!

Wher are all of the IT jobs?
Why aren't they posted on job sites?
Why haven't the employers contacted recuruting firms?
The truth is that employers want to import cheep labor using the special visas, rather than higher qualified US Citizens.
As an IT profesional with over 25 years experience, I'm constantly surprised by the number of my peers who can not find work in Michigan, and yet see aliens here on a special visa working.
Companies like JPMorgan Chase, in Columbus, Ohio layoff American workers on Wednesday and have an Indian fress off the plane in the same desk doing the same job on Thursday!
If the shortage really exists, why don't they contact Michiganjobs.org.

What person, especially a young one, wants to live in a Gestapo State where driver responsibility laws punish again, again, again for the same offence. I tell everybody not to come to Michigan to look for work. We have the highest taxes, highest crime rate, highest medical costs and we punish people for not having a job. If your looking for work and get a ticket, then can't pay the fine, you'll loose your driver license. Get caught looking for work without a drivers lic, more fines you can't pay, court costs and jail if you can't pay more fines. Then they impound your car, the one you need to get to work or look for work. The environment here is hopeless. Don't even come to Michigan and get a ticket, they can reach out and get you in the State your from, fine you more, or take your lic. in that State. It's just not worth the risk to live and work where the laws are so unjust to make the privilage of driving hazardous to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
