Michigan Wine Report

This week's recommended Michigan wine

Selections are by wine columnist Sandra Silfven, unless otherwise noted.

2007 Forty-Five North Pinot Noir Leelanau County, $22

-- July 3, 2008

You begin to pour and it appears light, and then the glass fills and the color is clearly a strong, profound ruby red. This is a very credible Pinot Noir, and quite young. The fruit is pristine, the wood is expensive. The nose explodes with black cherry fruit, vanilla, plums, and a slight herbaceous quality. What impresses is how clearly defined the aromas and fruit are. The palate has good acidity for balance, the oak is a bit up front, but the fruit still manages a shout. And this is just the first vintage. Screwtop, too.
