Rise of the Old Right

Au contraire, we see all to clearly what has become of the GOP. Ample evidence was provided by the 109th Congress, the Gubernators of the political world, and the "me-too ism" with which all too many in the GOP greet proposals from the Democrat left. We needn't even get into the Iraq business here.

Seems to me what you most prefer is the GOP as Democrat Lite, which says plenty about your own philosophical position regarding government. If I am wrong, please correct me.

Law by Referendum

Indeed Bud Wiser, I consider practically the only job of a Supreme Court is that of evaluating legislation as it relates to the constitution in question. There are arguments to be made on both sides of the California question, and the justices made an arbitrary choice. Before you instruct us that the majority were GOP appointees, I'll head that non-starter off at the pass by saying GOP does not equal strict constructionist interpretation of the constitution.

That a court could PRESUME that society's basic understanding of marriage is subject to its interpretation is nothing but the epitome of arrogance. On a matter so fundamental to society as this one, the judges ought to have deferred to a referendum, which is a hellofalot closer to the concepts of democracy than is judicial fiat. It is you, Bud, who has his head screwed on backwards on this issue, along with the damn fools in black robes. Your knack for "pissing off" people stems more from the egregious lines of "reasoning" you sometimes use to defend the indefensible than from anything else. We can all lay eggs, and I have. This time, though, the honor is all yours!

Required Algebra Adding Up To Failure

CKM, it would be great if we simply equalled the abilities of students from other countries.

We lose precious time when we sacrifice any of it in the school year due to poor instruction or simply taking time off. I note that West Bloomfield High sent its upperclassmen to Cedar Point earlier in the week, only to have them return without visiting the park because one student got sick from a marijuana cookie.

I cannot understand why a school administrator thinks it is ok to sponsor a trip to an amusement park and sacrifice a day of instruction. It wouldn't happen in my school. I spent 30 years battling lots of nonsense "ideas" in Detroit schools. Doing battles, of course, is a good way to keep oneself out of the promotion track. But that's ancient history.

Legislation is targeting the wrong end of the leash.

To be useful, legislation must be effective, enforceable, economical, and reasonably fair. Recently, a resolution has been placed before you that fails all of these tests. This legislation is motivated by fear and lack of relevant knowledge. It is discriminatory, impractical, and unenforceable. Worst of all, it will not solve the problem. I urge you to vote against it.

These breeds have been the subject of irresponsible and sensationalist reporting across the country. The media and the inexperienced would have you believe that these breeds are vicious and should be prohibited.

The plain fact is that there is no relationship between the type of the dog and the number of incidents. If your town has 100 German Shepherds and 1 Poodle, you'll soon learn that the German Shepherds are responsible for 100 times as many incidents as the Poodles. Does this mean that German Shepherds are intrinsically vicious? Of course not.

Taken as a whole, pitbulls and pitbull types have proven their stability and good canine citizenry by becoming 'Search & Rescue dogs, Therapy dogs working inside hospitals, and family companions for years. A five year study published in the Cincinnati Law Review in 1982, vol. 53, pg 1077, which specifically considered both Rottweilers and "pit bulls," concluded in part that: - statistics do not support the assertion that any one breed was dangerous, - when legislation is focused on the type of dog it fails, because it is ... unenforceable, confusing, and costly. - focusing legislation on dogs that are "vicious" distracts attention from the real problem, which is irresponsible owners.

In light of the studies, the facts, and the discriminatory nature of the proposed legislation, we urge you to take the following actions:

1. Reject the current legislation, which is contrary to fact and distracts from the real issue: responsible ownership.

2. Work to establish reasonable guidelines for responsible pet ownership, and encourage legislation that supports owner responsibility without reference to specific breeds.

Study after study shows that ANY dog, regardless of breed, will be whatever its owner makes of it....nothing more, nothing less. Owners can and should take responsibility for their pets. We suggest that the appropriate policy is "blame the owner, not the dog." If a dog attacks a person, the law should treat it as though the owner attacked that person.

Voting for this proposal as it stands will harm both the law abiding, responsible dog owners and the victims, but it won't solve anything.

FYI - Shame on the Humane Society/Shelter for not doing their part in EDUCATION!

Police Shoot Battle Creek Bear

This is the most ridiculous thing I ever heard!! WHERE IS THE DNR????

What gives those bunch of Keystone Cops the right to shoot a bear ???

then run it over with a vehicle, then shoot it again !!

I hope every one of those jerks, gets a big fine, or sits in jail.

I hope every authority is called in, and the person who is rresponsible for making a call to the DNR pays for this. I promise to send this story to every animal rights organization I can find.

What kind of people are we who treat animals like this ???

This is outrageous.

Yo Gary

Forgive me for not replying sooner. Didn't mean to be rude. But as you can see I haven't ingratiated myself with too many here. I'm not sure I have a single friend on board. I have the uncanny ability to piss people off.

No I've never had the pleasure of a Cuban coffee. I do enjoy the jolt of an espresso every now and again.

Saudi's

Perhaps President Bush should look towards American Oil Producers rather than foreign but than again it wouldn't help his family or friends if the flow of American oil production increased.

The American Oil Companies aren't increasing their oil production here at home. What are they saving it for?? Or are they purposely holding back the output as they can increase their profit margins???

The stockholders of oil companies are having a field day with this line of "supply and demand". It sure is working for them at our expense!!
