Games that are handed to Us
Simply have to be won in order for us to compete, if this turns out to be a loss then it will be unacceptable!!!!!! The 1st half is over, we need to do different stuff to win, it looks like the same old crap, Renteria, Jones, Sheffield & all the stuff that JL talked about with condensing his swing & he has a good game & Leyland don't start him tonight, I was looking to see tonight if maybe that's what he needs, but no JL rests him again, didn't we just have the All Star break?
Saving a Part of Tiger Stadium
It's Shame that all the old ballparks are gone. Now we have New stadiums with Corp. Names to them. There are only two great america ballparks left in america they are Fenway and Wrigley. Let's try to save a part of Tiger Stadium and put up a Historical Marker at Michigan Ave and Trumbull. I have attended many games at Tiger Stadium and saw Mark "THE BIRD"Fidrych. pitch there and sat under the Scoreboard on cold and rainny days. Let's save a part of America Baseball History!!!!! When our grandchildren and great-children ask what happend to Tiger Stadium we will answer to them saying that people in Detroit could cared less in saving america baseball history. Just look they will be doing the same to Yankee and Shea Stadiums as well. Come on People stand up and Save a part of America Baseball History. I will always be a baseball fan until my Dyeing day. So come on Mr. I please please save a part of Tiger Stadium. There are so many Tiger fans across this land of ours who want to save a part of baseball history.
I agree with Tony Paul
Leyland's criticism of Galarraga was way off base.
Leyland's treatment of a legitimate question by a reporter was uncalled for.
Leyland acts as if he is beyond questioning, and the media should only throw up softballs for him to swipe at.
Jim Leyland acts like he is not accountable for the lousy performance of this team all year.
He has made some good decisions, but he has made far too many bad decisions that have directly cost the team wins.
Leyland habitually takes effective pitchers out of the game.
Leyland habitually puts ineffective pitchers in the game.
Even the most casual fan can see that many of his moves bear a completely unnecessary risk of failure.
His bullpen roulette tactics bear a huge risk of failure, especially with the poor performances that the Tiger pen has been prone to giving us all season.
Leyland is to blame for a significant number of losses this season.
Jim Leyland is not the only problem, nor even the biggest part of the problem with the Tigers this season, but he is a part of the problem.

Memories
Those kind of memories are gems, TP - that one's worth hanging onto.
Tim Russert
A nice tribute to a good man, Tony Paul. He'll be greatly missed.
Thanks Gayle. I was a junior in college and working in the college newsroom on Election Night in 2000 when Russert busted out that dry-erase board. It's my most-vivid memory of American politics.
josh hamilton
hate to put a damper on a great story, but has hamilton been tested for hgh/steroids? it's tough to bounce back from one or a few injuries, but what? eight?
hope he's drugfree, but i wouldn't be surprised if he weren't.

Les is More, and Jason for Four?
How do you come up with this stuff so quickly? Thanks - these kinda' stories and stats are part of what makes baseball so captivating. . .
What........................
........no A-Rod and his wife news?
No MTV personality news?
Must be a slow night on the People Magazine newswire. We actually get baseball news tonight.
Here's a news alert, Tiger fans: "Pitching wins".
Thanks.
Ya get a blog for that?.................lol.
Oh, say it ain't so, To . . .
From #7 to #21. Ouch. The truth hurts, eh?
That bummed me out, but their play of late has all to often looked unispired. And, I just came to the realization there are 20 teams playing way better ball.
Less Spears, More Filling
Tony Paul - Thanks for your latest efforts. Not that my opinion counts for anything, but I found your Sunday Night Special very entertaining and it was fun to read the collective research you put into it. (I figured I owed you a kudo at least...)
Joe -- Every reader's opinion matters, for without readers, there would be no newspapers. Thanks for reading and for the kind words.
Lame Tony
Grilli did a decent job for the most part. He was the 11th or 12th man on the staff and performed like most do in that role.
Also when recounting his three straight walks against the A's you don't mention that one of the walks was an "intentional unintentional" walk where he was probably under orders to stay away. Also you neglect to mention Grilli's bigtime strike out in a key situation of Frank Thomas in the same series to end an inning a close game.
Grilli did a decent job when the game was out of hand.
With it on the line, he struggled -- mostly to throw strikes.
I won't argue he actually had decent stuff. Problem is, when his fastball was moving, it would dart out of the zone and he walked a lot of folks. When it wasn't moving, he often got shelled.
Bottom line: When Jason Grilli is all you have to worry about as a fan, your team is pretty darn good.

Nifty Leap
Ha! Yep, I saw that nifty leap. As always, your stuff is fun to read. And thanks for the reply, TP.
Palm trees swayin' in the breeze
Hello Tony Paul. A quick question for you: was that a two or a two-and-a-half palm-trees-rating that you had given to the Tampa Rays pre-seaon?
Ha! Valid point, gayle. And while I stand behind my thought that the Rays probably are a year or two (tops) away from serious contention, I love what's been going on in Tampa Bay lately. (You'll notice they made a nifty leap up the ladder of my Power Rankings this week:)
