Re: Metro Music Expo but what about

That is good about the Metro Music Expo Melody but what about the Warp tour at comerica park, I don't see no mention of that from you! Geez and I was hoping you would talk about that.

SonicBids & Metro Music Expo

Sonic Bids is loathsome! They charge outrageous fees to do little more than host an electronic press kit. MySpace, PowerPoint presentations, and PDFs do much the same, for free!

THEN..

SonicBids "partners" with anyone who can then charge a fee for submission for a given whatever.

The Metro Music Expo charges $10. Multiply that by a few hundred, and you see it's some real dough--with no guarantee of so much as a call back.

This is akin to charging $10 to submit one's resume' for a job opening. Bet the press would be all over THAT company!

Honest and ethical promoters, producers, publishers and labels, NEVER charge to submit materials!

Shame on The News for not exposing this unethical practice--even endorsing it!

Thanks for posting, Chuck! I'm not ecouraging bands to pay for Sonic Bids and apply for MME, I'm just letting them know that now is the time if they are interested. Bands and musicians are always asking me when is the right time to apply for things like this, and festivals. -- Melody

show me the money

i don't want to hear about anyone bring any real anything "back to the D" again. saying something like "we're bringing real rock back to the D" is as cliche as telling someone to talk to the hand. GO DETROIT ROCK CITY NIGHTCLUB, IT'S YOUR BIRTHDAY (insert cabbage patch dance)

Wed. 06/4/08 03:54 PM

Detroit Rock City

There's also going to be a great show by Death Cab for Cutie at the Fox tonight. Between that, STP, and hopefully a Wings victory it should be a crazy night in Det tonight!

rick derringer

Melody, I'm old enough to be your Rock N Roll Daddy. Rick Derringer was a member of the McCoys, y'know, of Hang On Sloopy fame, a garage band of the 60s. He went on to play with Johnny Winter when I saw him at the Eastown in Johnny Winter And. The other band on the bill that night was Humble Pie with Steve Marriott and Peter Frampton. I believe Rick Derringer wrote Rock N Roll Hootchie Coo and had a version out but Johnny Winter is better known for having covered the song when Rick brought it along with him to Johnny's band.

Tsk, tsk, tsk,

"You may have heard something about the Metro Music Expo, during the Hamtramck Blowout in March. I also wrote about on my blog around the same time."

No I didn't hear of the Metro Music Expo, just like you didn't hear or even talked about the Fushion4 festival coming Sunday, May 25 2008 Melody. I am surprise you didn't talk about this event that is happening in Detroit, and you call yourself a party gal ha lol!!!

Samuel Allen, Detroit, MI

Yeah, isn't that techno or something? :) Sounds like one of the many Movement-related parties happening that weekend. I'm sure it's mentioned in this week's paper with our Movement '08 coverage (check out Thursday's My Time!). You won't find much electronic music-related content on this blog, but the paper will have plenty of coverage this week and next. I never call myself a party girl, but plenty of other people do! Smoking Ban

I am all for the ban on smoking in public places like bars and restaurants, and workplace, smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer and it can be passed on to people though secondhand smoke, and I don't want my family and kids breathing the bad air cause by others. Healthcare is expensive these days, and the buttheads who smoke, probably can afford the high cost of healthcare, but the smokers don't want to pay for non-smoker's healthcare if they get lung cancer, cause by the smokers nasty habits.

I would suggest smokers bring plenty of chewing gum when they go out, or go sit in their cars to smoke. So PFFTTT!!!

Birthday Casino Fishbones

Thanks for taking me out. That was so much fun! But why WHY didn't I take my winnings after the first roulette bet broke even?????? Answer: Because it's the casino, and when you "win", you just keep betting until the money you planned on "losing" is gone. Oh well! That's the whole point, I guess.

christmas day liquor sales

the fact that liquor sales are illegal on Christmas day has nothing to do (directly) with religion. It is due to the high rate of suicide on christmas day.

It's not the state's problem with religion, it's the population's problem with religion.

bbbbbb, fernale, mi

Do you know where I can read more about that?

According to the Mayo clinic, what you say is not exactly true:

Smoking ban

I completely agree that smoking in bars should be up to the owner and not the government.

Sun. 05/11/08 12:33 AM

Smoking Ban

I have to say that most of the comments on this forum are missing the point. First, no one forces you to patronize any establishment that allows smoking. What business do you have to tell a bar owner he has to ban smoking? If you walk in, and you see someone light up, and you don't like it, just turn around and leave. It really is no more difficult than that. According to the Detroit News article there are over 5100 bars that don't allow smoking that you can go to. This is a property rights issue and no more difficult than that.

Now as to the idea that bar employees are not being protected from second hand smoke exposure. If the employee works in a bar that allows smoking ,as of right now, then they have implicitly given their consent to be in that environment. There are thousands of other occupations that they can take up if they are bothered by the smell of tobacco smoke. At the risk of sounding crude... If you are going to be a manure shoveler, you better like the smell of crap. It goes with the job.

Now, we arrive at the health argument. Studies that link second hand smoking to cancer are dubious at best. It is impossible to attribute cancer only to the second hand smoke when you can't monitor all of the other factors that may have contributed to it such as diet, exercise, alcohol and drug consumption and other environmental conditions. It is horrible science to make grand pronouncements about your results when you don't have a true "control" in your experiment.

And then there is first hand smoke. What about the millions of people who smoke their entire lives and live well into their 80's and beyond? My grandfather smoked for 65 years and drank alcohol and ate lots of red meat. He is now in good health living at 94. How about most of our great entertainers from yesteryear? I bring this up because everyone knows these people and how long-lived they were. George Burns, Groucho Marx, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Red Skelton, Milton Berle, Bob Hope... The list goes on and on of people everyone knows who were all exposed to second and first hand smoke almost everyday of their lives and still exceeded the life expectancy rate by 10+ years.

Tobacco as an addiction... I'm sure it can be addicting if you smoke all the time. A lot of things are addicting. My own weakness is for fatty foods. But just because you are unable to control your addictive tendencies why should I not be allowed to smoke? I enjoy smoking pipes and cigars and I love smoking cigarettes when I drink. I am not addicted. I go a month sometimes without smoking anything at all. Why should you be able to tell me I can't smoke when I'm not addicted anymore than I should tell you you can't drink when you're not an alcoholic?

When you strip away all the phony justifications for this it really just boils down to two things. The first is the denial that we are ever going to die. I hate to break this to everyone out there but its going to happen... Being a vegan and exercising like crazy MAY get you a couple of extra years but we're all going to end up in intensive care at some point if we're not hit by a bus first.

The other reason for these bans is the tyranny of the majority. Let's face it, when we don't like something other people are doing our first reaction is to say "They should pass a law against that!" while exempting our own activities that others may find offensive. If we were being intellectually honest with ourselves we would ban alcohol before cigarettes. Alcohol has destroyed more families, caused more mental and physical abuse and lead to more preventable deaths then any other drug man has ever devised. Do we really want 51% of the people telling the other 49% how to live their lives? Be VERY careful about where you tread down this path because at some point in your life (probably several) you are going to be in the 49%. Isn't that why we have the Sunday alcohol sales ban that Melody rails against in her column? Ultimately remember this: when you give the government the power to ban the things you hate you also give it the power to ban the things you love.

Smoking Ban

This is just one more aspect of our lives the liberals can control. Wake up people they are controlling us one law at a time.
