Light Years Away
Dozens of stargazers peer through telescopes aimed at Jupiter and the moon as they examine the skies at Kensington Metropark during the annual "Astronomy at the Beach" event Saturday night. Light is the enemy; only streaks of glowing toys and telescope lights illuminate the dark at this other-worldly gathering hosted by the Great Lakes Association of Astronomy Clubs.

Niagra in the Mist
Heading back from the Lions, Bills game, I stayed over night in Niagra Falls, Ontario. Pulled into town around 11:30 pm, dumped my stuff and headed out. The Falls are amazing! Day or night. As I waded through the mist coming off the horseshoe falls due to a wicked wind, I turned away and saw the scene here. A Lions victory, Preseson Champions, and some sight seeing make for an excellent road trip. Next week, the real deal, game one against Joey Harrington and the Atlanta Falcons.

Detroit's Empty Lot
St. Louis has the Arch, Seattle has the Space Needle, New York has...well New York I guess but what about Detroit. As Tiger Stadium is slowly, painfully converted from a Detroit icon to another empty field and the old train station is nothing but a soulless skeleton, I'm not sure what is left that really represents Detroit. The Renaissance Center, aka GM World headquarters, is often at the center of many a skyline view of the city but is that really a symbol of Detroit? The Joe Louis Fist, Tyree Guyton's Heidelberg Project, the Motown Museum, Michigan Labor Legacy Landmark, the giant tire...are all good but can they compare with New Orleans' French Quarter, San Francisco's Pier 39 or Chicago's Ditka? I'm not against clearing away dilapidated buildings but I'm starting to wonder if it's not at the expense of losing our personality, warts and all.

Mediterranean Blue
Four days and counting until the massive rolling sideshow of steel, chrome and exhaust--the annual Dream Cruise. Dave Jostes, 72, from Illinois, polishes the grill on his 1970 "Mediterranean Blue" Chevelle in the parking lot at 13 mile and Woodward, Ground Zero for Dream Cruisers, in Royal Oak, Michigan on August 12, 2008. Though the parking lot was mostly empty on this early morning, as the week passes it will be jam packed with vintage autos strutting their stuff.
